We've had rain. Drats, I should have taken pictures of the water rushing over the edges of the gutters and my backyard puddling so my feet got wet when I walked the dogs out there (had to go out with them because they DID NOT want to walk in the big puddle). Ah well, no pics but just think of a good, hard rain coming and going for a few days and you'll have the picture. It was badly needed and doesn't put but a dent in the drought we are in but it was a good start!

I do have some pics for you though. This first one was for fun. I'd bought the pears with the intention of drawing them prior to eating them but they were getting eaten first so I finally drew the last one before it was gone.

These next two pictures are from my granddaughter's birthday. She loves animals so horseback riding was a great choice for her. Would you believe it costs $50 an hour per person? That sounds like so much to me but I am getting a bit older and out of touch with things like that. I remember when Disneyland cost $8 for a whole day!
At any rate, she enjoyed the ride which I didn't go on.

Instead, I drew one of the horses waiting at the fence. I drew it with a Tombow pen and then added watercolor. Tombows bleed when they get wet so it can hurt or help a picture. (They are really good when you want to work with just one color but want a bit of shading).
The other pic is small photos of her day with the background made of the gift wrap taken from her gifts after they'd been opened.

These next two pics are from an article someone shared with me on Facebook by David Rankin ( http://davidrankinwatercolor.macmate.me/David_Rankin_Watercolor_Site/Faces_files/Sketching%20Faces%20Faster.pdf ). I tried his generic eye and then went on to a face in my Vegetarian Times magazine which my son gave me a subscription to (thanks James) and from that to my great nephew's face on Facebook because he looked so happy to be spending a day with his dad at the Army base starting with breakfast in the chow hall. I need a lot more practice both with getting his method down and with skill but I was actually pretty happy with these quick drawings. Since I made the lady's face too wide I overcompensated and made my nephew's face too thin and I need to keep to the pencil rather than a ballpoint pen for starters.

My granddaughters don't think they have the art gene but as you can see in this next picture, they do! I wanted my nails done and told them they could do anything they wanted. They know I like color so this is what they came up with. I was happy with it and it lasted for just over a week (it's time to get the remover out for sure now - gardening and doing dishes is not conducive to keeping manicures nice)

And lastly, I made some potato bread a couple of days ago. I save leftover potatoes in the freezer just for this as it makes a more moist and longer lasting bread and this is also why I never put pepper in my potatoes! I've eaten 2/3 of one loaf already and the other is sitting in the freezer to keep it fresh till my husband feels like eating some. Can you believe he doesn't feel the urge to gobble it up when I bake it? I mean, how can anyone resist fresh bread?

Well, that wasn't the last thing afterall. Here is the ballerina picture I bought from Jennifer Edwards all framed. It was hard to get a good picture due to the mirror-like frame but I was very happy with how it turned out!

Do I have one more thing? Oh yes, I do!

I added new knobs from World Market to my kitchen cabinets! There are two of each kind except for one (due to an odd number of cabinets) so it looks pretty much like all different ones but if I ever find cobalt blue or bright red ones I may change a couple out. I like this so much better than all the same since the kitchen doesn't have a lot of it's own color but they don't stand out and shout "Look at me" either.

First off, this is a busy time of year for my family. Yep, we just finished Christmas but January has two birthdays, February has two and March has one. Then it's on to Easter but that is still down the road. So the first thing was my granddaughter's 17th birthday. Since I am now in California I was determined to make it. She chose to drive down to her Uncle's in Oceanside so she could go to the beaches there. We started off with singing Happy Birthday, giving her her presents and having a cupcake before heading out to Oceanside Beach. We stayed for a few hours and then it was off to lunch at a local fast food place that dips their chicken and onion rings in fresh batter before frying! They have fresh French fries and make up the salads when you order one. She wanted their milkshake and French fries. After that it was a short ways down the coast to Carlsbad Beach where we stayed till the sun set. Then it felt chilly so we were ready to leave! The kids didn't really swim but they played ball out in the water for a couple of hours. The day ended with dinner at Olive Garden and a drive up to Simi Valley back to their house.

The pictures show the happy birthday part before the beach, having fun at the beach (my son was giving my daughter lessons in beach volleyball) and there had to be at least one ritual "bury her in the sand" job! The fire hydrant was at Carlsbad beach and I just had to have a photo (if you like sketching these things feel free to do so) and the last pic are the sand and sea cupcakes along with part of the Happy Birthday sign everyone gets on their birthday at my daughter's (along with whatever they want to eat all day which was pie dough for Victoria last year for breakfast and a Chipotle burrito for breakfast this year). She likes to make sure it is THEIR day and she is happy they are here!

While we waited the few days till the next birthday we went shopping where I saw this fountain with the girl and her kite and I thought of my online friend Jennifer Edwards and her new book Genevieve and the Kite. Do you see the kite way up towards the top of the building?

I also had to pick out a frame with my daughter's help for the picture of a ballerina I bought from Jennifer for my granddaughter's birthday present. Tena thought the mirror like frame would be like looking in the mirror as the dancers do when they practice. (My granddaughter dances ballet and helps out with the younger children). Her favorite color is purple. How perfect is that?

Then I felt drawing withdrawals so I did a quick sketch page of the fountain in my daughter's backyard. This fountain has weeds around it now but they plant veggies around it in the summertime.

My youngest granddaughter (who is almost 13 but that's next month) made me this frog cling for my window since I love frogs and she wanted to make something. The pattern was in a book but she chose the colors.

So now granddaughter number two had her birthday. We had bacon for breakfast. We would have had eggs too but it was getting late and we were going to Yolanda's Mexican restaurant for lunch. She is the socialite of the family so butterfly cupcakes were made for her dance class. They were done just in time! When she got home from dance we had present opening time and cake from the Olive Garden which is her favorite. The picture I was giving her wasn't done being framed so she got a picture of it tucked in a card. The picture here shows her with the gift from Victoria - a framed photo she took during her photography class of Little Bit's dog. You can see it was a hit!

The next day we baked lots of cake for a sleepover party. It was all done in bright colors with a piñata shaped like a cupcake. All in all it was a successful first round of birthdays!

Lastly, this is what I've been up to craftwise. I am making some socks for myself. It's a lacy pattern but a simple one. It breaks up the variegated yarn pattern nicely.

I am also knitting a simple lap blanket for a sister of mine who is going through a rough patch emotionally. I've already made a mistake and it shows. I couldn't figure out how to undo it so I guess there will be a few crocheted flowers strewn on this when I am done knitting it.

Then, I have joined in on some new journaling classes. One looks like it has a plan to really cover a lot of ground in a few steps each day. The course suggests using a weekly calendar but I am using a composition book. I think once I get the hang of it, it will be a good tool. There are places to put a theme for the month, colors and artwork for it along with small bits for each day. We'll see how I do long term, lol. The second class just looked like fun and I have already learned a good way to map out what I draw. But then I goofed and any good artist will see it but I don't think it wrecked my page even though the rule was broken. For those who don't see it, the general rule is to NOT divide the page in half and with my paint brush, you can see that is just what I did. It was wonky on the palette so I didn't notice how it landed on my page. I will be watching for that in future. As they say, we learn far more from our mistakes....

The classes are: 1. No Excuses Art Journaling (which is a book you can buy and also a class you can take online)

2. Draw Your Awesome Life given by Joanne Sharpe

My palette I call the Laure Ferlita palette as she uses it and suggests it and these paints for her classes at Imaginarytrips.com.

Jennifer Edwards has not only Genevieve and the Kite book published but a poetry book called Words on a Line, and Letters to an Artist. Check them out at Amazon or on her website Jennifer Edwards.

Hope you all made it this far. Have a great day and go create something!

I've been busy. This is some of what I've been doing. I went to my granddaughter's Nutcracker Ballet. This year was the best production of the 3 years I've gone. It was worth the $20 I paid for a ticket. Little Bit looked and danced wonderfully as usual.

I went over to my son's to help him decorate his tree (Oceanside - one hour away) before heading down to a retirement party for my nephew who is retiring from the Santee Fire Department after 30 years (one hour from my son's house). We had a nice time as I got to see people I haven't seen in a while and now that I am in California I get to make these events even if I do have to drive an hour or two! It's much better than a 6 hour drive! I also drove halfway between Hemet and Oceanside to have lunch with one of my sisters and to give her some fruitcakes and fruitcake cookies I'd made as she is the only one who likes them besides me.

I baked! These gingerbread men are vegan and so I took them to the retirement party (my nephew is so allergic to milk products he's almost died several times from touching something with milk on it)! I've also made brown sugar fudge which I took over the making of when my mother-in-law died. (It didn't turn out the first few times so I prayed about it telling God I was only trying to keep my mother-in-law's tradition for her son going and you know, it's never failed since in 30 years)! I made divinity for me, fattigman (Norwegian for Poor Man's Food - a cookie), Chex snack mix, fruitcake and fruitcake cookies and a bar cookie I veganized for my son. He says it's the only sweet he really cares about and has been after me to veganize it for a few years. We'll see how I did tonight!

I have played a bit with pens making an impromptu Christmas sketch and working on a colored pencil drawing in my other sketchbook where I have six colored pencils I use, one each of red, yellow and blue in a warm tone and a cool tone. I was happy to see I could make a decent black with them!

I managed to get the two pairs of slipper socks knit for my son, a yearly tradition!

And lastly, I made a Christmas card from a journal page I have shared already. I needed one fast and realized this journal page would work if I cropped out my personal writing and bordered it adding a Merry Christmas. What I forgot to do was ask permission from using Jennifer's poem on a journal page (which she was fine with) to using it on a card! I will have to apologize for that mistake.

So what have you been up to? I'm sure everyone has their "too busy at Christmas" tales to tell!

Merry Christmas again and see you next year!Timareehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769047120660859743noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453664334855050694.post-53441440000158750212013-12-07T09:56:00.000-08:002013-12-07T09:57:23.074-08:00Christmas Tree and A Poem
Hope you are all getting ready for Christmas but taking some time out for yourself. I was reminded to take a 20 minute breather today and it was lovely. Something I really needed. I was reminded by Jennifer Edwards who wrote the poem I put on my journal page.

I tried drawing a One Line Tree but actually lifted my pen a few times. I had fun though and liked what I ended up with. Try it for yourself. Jennifer's One Line Tree is here. I'm sure you'll have fun coming up with your own version plus you'll feel much more in the holiday spirit afterwards too!

My tree (the real one which is actually an artificial one...hmmm, well it's as real as mine will be), is covered in handmade or gifted ornaments. The first year I was married I had only a very limited amount of money to buy ornaments so I bought a few kits and made many and then bought just a few glass ornaments. Over the years I made many ornaments sending them to my sisters who sent back some ornaments they'd either made or bought where they were stationed by the army at the time. My kids made some and even my grandkids have added to my tree. The Santa face you see on my drawn tree came from my nephew, now 45 years old!

I have been quite busy working on gifts and baking and visiting so had put "just having fun drawing" time on the back burner until this morning. Aaaah, I feel so good now. I think I'll go have a gingerbread man for breakfast!

Oh, the poem! Well, that's at Jennifer's blog at the second link I gave up above. It's also on my page so if you can enlarge the picture you can read it there too. Enjoy today and the whole season!Timareehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769047120660859743noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453664334855050694.post-7586333828023508662013-11-03T20:36:00.002-08:002013-11-03T20:36:11.678-08:00My Dog, Biscuit

I cheated! I wanted to do a quick sketch of Biscuit as I kept throwing his toy for him but my inner critic said I would ruin my journal if I put it straight in there so I used a sheet of printer paper. I know, I know, I shouldn't let that critic boss me around like that! Anyhow, I liked how it turned out so added some color. I still liked it so now I had to cut it up and collage it into a journal!

And there it is, all done in my composition book journal where I have pages already painted and ready for something to be added. I think it worked out pretty well but hope I have the courage next time to just go straight to the journal!

This is a photo I took as Biscuit waited for some food to drop while we cooked. He's a bit misshapen due to a too-long back and legs and some sort of back problem he came with so he sits sort of funny. It's cute to me so I took his picture.

Then I decided to journal his picture to see if I could draw and paint this one. I did go straight to my journal this time! Hopefully I will get better with time but I am happy with it right now.
I love this little dog we got from the shelter. To think his time was up the next day and the shelter didn't even want us to come see him since he has the weak hind legs! One look and we were smitten. Biscuit is one happy dog. He keeps my cat busy which is good as she was getting rather bored but that's another story for another day!

Happy Halloween! I am waiting for the fence guy to come and build my gates so thought I would wade into finding my photos (after updating my Windows 8 which got rid of the Libraries so now I have to find things in different places) (oh, and after getting an IOS7 update my photostream isn't being updated anymore either)different places. So, after finding my Halloween picture I am finally posting it!

I was over at Laure Ferlita's blog Painted Thoughts Blog where she shared the witch picture with us. I printed it out on Magic Matte paper which I bought at Cre8it.com. It's thin paper but strong and does a super job for photos and art journaling! I couldn't help but think of my purple hair for this witch and the sign I had in the front yard so I put the two together and made "me". This is the highlight of my Halloween as I am not expecting very many trick-or-treaters if any and candy corn only goes so far!

Hope you enjoy your holiday and treats but hopefully no tricks!

Since my husband isn't with me for his holiday I sort of took one for myself! I wanted to try a cake I saw online that said it's the only yellow cake recipe you'll ever need and they are right for the most part. It's not vegan for sure so I need to have one of those too! (My son is vegan and although he doesn't want a lot of sweets, I'd like to be able to give him one once in a while). Now I have to pig out because that whole cake is just for me! I can't ask the neighbor if she'd want any since she is diabetic and I won't want to tempt her so it's just me. I imagine I'll eat most of it though :-)

The Sketchbook Challenge has Garden Doodles as it's theme this month. I haven't done anything for that group in over a year! My how time flies. Anyhow, I thought how hard could it be to take my sketchbook outside with a pen and see what would happen. It wasn't hard. I worked fast and scribbly not worrying about whether the plants looked exactly like my plants or garden and then I added watercolor. It took me about 20 minutes total. If that isn't doodling, what is?

I think a couple of teacher/bloggers would be proud of me, Laure Ferlita for sketching and doing it fast so I could get it done in one quick session, and Jennifer Edwards who does loose, lively sketches that I try so hard to do sometimes. This time I think I accomplished a lot by getting intrigued by doodling in my garden. I am nowhere near to what these teachers can do but I am learning and beyond enjoying the drawing and painting, isn't learning something we all want to do?

So what did you all do on Father's Day? Timareehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769047120660859743noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453664334855050694.post-1904420072814651142013-05-14T20:40:00.001-07:002013-05-14T20:46:02.191-07:00The Aftermath
As my last post said, our house in Arizona was broken into and the copper wire was stolen. Because of that my husband is staying there till we sell the house. We've moved most of our belongings to California so he went out and got a few things like a bright blue plastic gingham tablecloth for the brown folding table that is in the dining room and a cheap flatware set from Walmart. It is surprising in that it is such a colorful set. That is what I tend to go for, not him! I decided to paint the flatware in my journal to remember his choice later on.

I asked my husband to scan it in for me and he did - after he got the scanner working. It was being pretty stubborn being on wireless and my husband wasn't in the best of moods because when I tried using the disposal after dinner it made terrible noises and so to top everything off lately it seems we now need a new disposal! We go to sign papers at the realtor tomorrow putting the house up for sale so the timing was not good. Ah well, life does go on and later this will just be part of our "moving to California" story. We will laugh about it then.

Life was pretty rosy when my husband told me to buy the California house. I've been having fun decorating it and planting flowers and a few veggies.

But, we have to deal with the house in Arizona. We went back to clear some more stuff out of it and do some cleaning. When we got there the back door was swinging in the wind and the glass was shattered. A piece of skirting (it is a mobile home) was off also. Well, we looked inside and the electrical panel door was off also. We were trying to figure out what happened. I looked around inside while my husband looked outside. The thieves (yep it was thievery) didn't take the appliances, TV, furniture or any of the stuff like generators and pumps that were in the garage and out buildings. What they did take was the power wire running from the outside electrical box on the power pole to our connection inside the house. We are all electric so that was some pretty heavy duty copper. That's all they took but by doing so they smashed our door's window and everything in the well-stocked refrigerator was spoiled (boy did it stink). My husband is staying there now until the house is sold to prevent any more of that.
So yes, we are putting the house and property on the market. From a high of $350k just before the market crashed, the realtor now says we'll be lucky to get $70k on the sale! That's just over half what we paid for the whole thing! So we are having our ups and downs right now.

I am looking for the humor if I can find any and otherwise just trying to adjust, to my husband trying to "solve" the crime by deciding which of the nearby people would be the most likely culprit, to moving on with whatever comes ahead. I don't think that was a very good sentence but basically we are dealing with the stresses the best way we know how and I think this page in my journal which I started before we found the theft fits with the way I want to move forward. Bad things happen and good things happen. That's life. I want to concentrate on the good things. It seems to make all of life better!

On a lighter note, this is our new puppy. I saw him on a list of dogs that were facing euthanasia very soon. I called the shelter and they said it was possible as of the next day so we went and got him. He's 4 months old and needing housebreaking but he is already learning from the other dogs. In the last pic, he found he could get the big dog to play today. She needs the play as much as the little dog does. My cat is not thrilled to say the least and has attacked a couple of times (thank goodness she doesn't have her front claws) but we are hoping she'll come around to accepting him or he'll learn to stay well clear of her)

I've been busy going from one house to the other working on both either cleaning up to sell the one or planting flowers and veggies in the new one. I'll be leaving for a week to the old one again and sure hope the plants can handle it without being watered. I have taken some time to do some journaling though and these pics are what I've done.

You've seen the first picture already. I only posted it so you could see the difference with the finished version which is the second posted picture.

The grapefruit page is one half of a spread. I finished this half but still need to paint the tangelo half.

The last picture is a spread I did when my grandson enlisted in the army. He looks so young! I remember dating sailors his age and thought they were men! I was all of 16 at the time but now at 59 I am seeing things quite differently. Although I personally didn't want him to go into the military since we always seem to be at war anymore, I am happy for him as it gives him a direction to go for his life and college was not working for him - he does not do standard education well (he consistently gets D's and some F's yet scored extremely high on the military admittance test and has tested well on California state tests - he just can't do the paperwork for the classes). My brother-in-law, a retired Army officer says the army uses words, sight and hands-on teaching so my grandson will do just fine. He wanted infantry and has a cousin he could find himself serving under perhaps which could be good and bad so we'll see what happens if it even comes up. My dad was in the infantry during WWII so we now have a 3 generation tradition going (not that just being in the military isn't one for my family already with my grandfathers in the cavalry, my mother and sister marines, my husband retired from the navy and my brothers-in-law and son retiring from the army or having served in the navy). I just hope he likes it. Actually it makes a great career path for him as long as we stay peaceful as a country for a while!
I finally have my scanner/printer at my new home so can upload pictures for my blog easier. I'd tried with my Iphone but last time I had to cancel my post as the pics didn't fit right. I'll get to those pics as soon as I update Iphotos on my computer. In the meantime I have scanned in what I did today.

Today was busy. I went shopping for some natural looking bark and potting soil to plant my new trees before I head back to Kingman for some more moving chores. My back is hurting but my garden looks a bit better and my trees might get to bloom and grow now they are in pots and watered.

My yard is rather atrocious at present. Here in hot Hemet a lot of seniors in the past made their yards non-toil by putting in tiny gravel and having a green spray of some sort cover it all rather like a plastic coating. That is what my back yard is at present except for to long narrow planters so I fixed them up. Hopefully we can sell our old house eventually (not too many people are selling in order to buy what we have which is what was done before the recession when Californians sold homes for great prices and bought desert ranches to keep horses on) and then I can have the yard scraped up, towed away and a patio, cover and a tiny bit of grass for the dogs put in. In the meantime I can enjoy the planter boxes and my potted trees!

I didn't finish painting before it got dark so the one section didn't get done. I didn't wait to post because I haven't had such a good track record of posting lately so took the time this evening to post what I had already.

I've tried to upload some pics from my Iphone photo stream but its not cooperating or I'd show you the real version of what my journal page shows.
Timareehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769047120660859743noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453664334855050694.post-64854420394483471362013-02-21T15:33:00.000-08:002013-02-21T15:33:14.576-08:00I Really Am HereHi everyone. I am still moving and don't have my scanner yet. I have done a tiny bit of creating and these photoessays are proof of it. Not a lot but hopefully once I am all settled I will create more regularly.

The stools used to have a green base but it didn't go with the new room they would be in. I didn't want to give them up because I painted them for my dad back in 1994 and he's gone now so I have the stools back. (I am more sentimental than I used to think I'd ever be).

The journal pages speak for themselves. I should have a lot more of them than I do.

I should be getting my red living room couch this month and then I can take pics of what I've been doing to decorate my new home to share with everyone.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Timareehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769047120660859743noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453664334855050694.post-73886385970159139002013-01-12T14:45:00.001-08:002013-01-12T14:45:38.721-08:00Painting AgainIt's been a long time since I've done any art. I couldn't resist trying to put my new salt and pepper shakers on this background I had done previously. I don't think I made the colors pop enough but I am pleased with my wonky shakers and more pleased that I got something done!

I am really going red in my new house. I am only partly moved but had to share my new red sofa. My husband is.balking at the purple rug I ordered to go with it though 😊!

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Timareehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769047120660859743noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453664334855050694.post-51692814044529811092012-10-21T14:54:00.001-07:002012-10-21T14:54:45.253-07:00New House

I have been waiting to do this for a really long time. My husband will probably not be as happy as he has been on this 40 acres of desert but I've had a longing to get back to California. Hemet is 1 hour from my son's house, 2 hours from my daughter's and 1.5 from a sister and some other family down in the Santee area which means I'll be close enough for family get-togethers but far enough away that I won't bug everyone to go out for lunch or dinner every week!

I couldn't believe it when my husband told me to actually go looking for houses when I was in California last time and I really couldn't believe it when he asked me if I found one and if so, to put a bid on it! He was going to go look at a couple I liked but got a really bad case of sciatica and hasn't been able to go anywhere for over 10 days now. Because of that, I just got to pick the one I wanted most and we've now got the news our offer was accepted. Geez, I am so excited.

We'll take our time, maybe up to 1 1/2 years to move (although once my husband gets started on something he usually just goes full tilt on it) completely. Maybe the market will start improving where we currently live so we can sell the house we are in okay.

I went out to California for my glaucoma appointment and had laser surgery as the pressure is just not coming down with the drops they have me on. I hope it works and will find out at Christmas time. If not, I'll try giving up coffee and see what happens. The doctor says it doesn't matter about my coffee but my son read about a study showing coffee does affect one type of glaucoma (and I am not sure what type I have) especially among Scandinavian peoples. I come from Norwegian stock and some Irish too (we know how the Norse travelled that area) so who knows, it might affect me. I don't want to give it up yet as I like it and I want to see if the surgery worked. One step at a time! I was also told I have a cloudy build-up on my lenses that replaced my real eye lenses. The doctor was surprised I can see as well as I do so I think some more laser surgery is in my future.

Not much art at all in this post but life is in flux for me as you can see. I could feel my depression lift when I realized my husband was serious about moving. I didn't think I was letting it bother me so much but guess it was.

The page I made here was started as part of a lesson months ago and I didn't know where to go with it after playing with the watercolor and gluing on the butterfly stamping scrap. I wanted to make a page about the new house (which was built in 1976 and so isn't really new at all) and this seemed made for it. So don't ever throw away a page you start but don't finish. You may find a use for it later too!

Finally, I've gotten out a pencil and did a sketch. I think it's been over 3 months since I've drawn anything. I was sick and tired of not doing any drawing at all. Not a fancy page for my journal but a bit of life. It feels good to have laid pencil to paper again.
The only other thing I've been doing lately is knitting on a scrap afghan. I was sick and tired of doing nothing at all so I started one. Sometimes I get a bit down in the dumps. I hope it's going away and I will even want to start putting color on a page!Timareehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769047120660859743noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453664334855050694.post-2164284949054389642012-06-23T16:14:00.001-07:002012-06-23T16:14:38.526-07:00California Driving

My daughter was driving her son and four of his friends to a water park by Magic Mountain. It's about 35 miles away and took us an hour to get to because of the traffic. It was a Friday and I guess lots of people were heading north for the weekend. Just a few miles from our exit off of I-5 in Santa Clarita the police shut down the freeway for about 15 minutes because a car had broken down in the fast lane. I don't know why they shut the whole thing down and I sure don't know why they finally opened only one out of four lanes once they reopened it but that's the way this kind of thing happens. At any rate, I was prepared. I had coffee, cookies and my journal! I only got the pencil sketch done before we were moving again but it helped to pass the time. I painted the picture this morning at home.

By the way, I got to go pick up the kids because my daughter had another place to be in the evening. I stopped at Starbuck's to get my granddaughter who was my co-pilot and I a nice cold drink and figured on 70 minutes driving time. It took 76! One way, for the 35 miles! No time for another drawing though as this time it was me who was driving and I might be from California but contrary to public opinion we are not crazy!

I took the liberty of making a purple car versus another gray one! Hope you are getting where you need to this weekend without traffic jams or other problems. Still, if I had my way, I'd be living here and not in Arizona where I don't have any traffic problems since I don't live in the Phoenix area.Timareehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769047120660859743noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453664334855050694.post-5776451110476404252012-06-18T12:05:00.000-07:002012-06-18T12:08:59.596-07:00Drawing with My Granddaughters

As you all know, I am having an extended stay in California. I'm taking advantage of it by trying to do art with my granddaughters. I need to catch up on the classes I am taking and hopefully this week I will be able to do that.

The first two pictures were done because my daughter says the girls should do something while they watch TV. They watch the same shows over and over or at least that's how it seems to me, so it's easy to do something besides just watching it again. I suggested to one (while the other did a puzzle) that she divide a page in fourths and pick four objects in the room to draw. Her sister suggested she draw some items on the fireplace mantel so this is what she did. I gave her a gray Tombow (non-waterproof) pen and she drew straight in ink so she couldn't fiddle around. Afterwards I showed her how to wet it to shade the drawings a bit with the ink that blurs out when wet. I think she did great with her first straight ink drawings. The second picture is from the littler sister who gave it a try the next day and wanted to draw her dog and it's belongings. I am very happy they gave leadfree drawings a try and that they didn't worry about picking "easy" things to draw!

The next two photos are collage pages I helped the girls with while they were at the allergists. After they get their 3 shots each (glad I never had to do that) they have to sit and wait twenty minutes to see if they react badly and its a boring time for them. I grabbed my art kit and they grabbed their journals and I showed them how to make a page to remember a holiday by. It just took some giftwrap leftover from the day and a copy of a photo. A few words and they had a nice addition to their books.

The last picture is a page I made from the sketches (1 min. max each) I did of some handy objects to show them how to draw with the pen and how to shade with the waterbrush. One of the girls used their mother's cricut machine to cut out the daisies for me. I played with watercolor on the page and tried throwing some for blotches. I don't recommend using the water brush for this anymore for two reasons. One, it gets the paint too light colored and two, the force of swinging the brush pulled part of it apart. I was able to put it back together but won't use it again unless that's all I have handy. I adhered the items on backwards from planned. I would normally put something like a shoe on the inside edge of a page so it has some space to "walk off" the page. I'll add a bit of writing when I figure out what to say.... and then I will get to looking at my art lessons.... just as soon as we get back from driving to Oxnard to drop off the ballerina for her dress rehearsal and get lunch and go grocery shopping and....

Hope you are having a productive and fun day!Timareehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769047120660859743noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453664334855050694.post-20322583695072013942012-06-13T10:29:00.002-07:002012-06-13T10:29:38.861-07:00Loving California

This is a journal I keep in my purse at all times for the odd moment when I can fit in a sketch.
The pencil drawing was done while at the beach. My son was moving all over the place as he played volleyball. I tried to just catch his pose rather than an exact likeness which I knew would be impossible right from the start. I would wait till he got back in this stance to draw a bit more and would have kept improving on it but the game ended and it was the last game of the weekend.

The second picture was done yesterday. I tagged along when my daughter took the kids to Tilly's where my grandson was looking to buy a couple of shirts. We left with a couple of shirts, a pair of pants, a top for one of the girls and sun glasses for another of the girls and myself! Oh, AND this sketch of one of the display tables. It took me about 10-15 minutes as I really hurried to get done before the family was ready to leave. One of the sales clerks was super nice and asked if I was a professional artist! She was definitely more impressed than my family was. When I got home I added one more layer of color to everything but the hats to help them stand out better and then I took the photo. You can do this too and if you think you can't then perhaps you should take some journaling classes with Laure Ferlita of Imaginarytrips.com as she will teach you how to do it well and fast!

Today I hope to get some class art work done but it looks like we might be very busy again!
Timareehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769047120660859743noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453664334855050694.post-85184243421047771092012-06-10T11:24:00.002-07:002012-06-10T11:24:44.136-07:00Mission Beach in San Diego Plus One

I am here in Oceanside, California at my son's house. Yesterday we went down to San Diego's Mission Beach where he plays volleyball on Saturdays. It was gray, breezy and cool but I had a sweatshirt to keep me warm.

I took plenty of photos of my son playing as he likes to look at them to see what he is doing right or wrong but I still took time for myself. I went for a long walk to find some coffee and started with a caramel mocha which was the worst coffee I've ever had so I tossed it out and got a plain cup of coffee at another vendor. Then I walked back down to the volleyball area and sat down with my sketchbook. It didn't take me long to put a few pencil lines down and add some paint especially after seeing my online watercolor teacher Laure Ferlita do a similar picture in class!
This picture was done two days ago as I sat at my son't dining table using my computer and looking out the living room window. I liked seeing the green bushes and the mailbox so did a quick sketch. It's good to leave home sometimes and get a different perspective! This was done with some of the lessons and thoughts behind them that I've gained from Jennifer Edwards on her blog. I didn't draw the houses on the other side of the street as she recommends to draw just what drew you to the scene. Laure says to simplify down to what gives you the essence of the place you are sketching so between the two I've had some good advice to follow.
I've been busy doing mostly art for a couple of classes I am in but I also am drawing some other stuff in my journal. Someday I hope to do some work outside my journal, something I can frame if it comes out nice enough.

I am reading and enjoying the lessons that Jennifer Edwards has been offering on her blog Drawn2Life and the top picture here comes from her lesson #9 which is about letting loose. I don't know if I was all that loose but I did have fun and I made sure the page was done when it was done rather than leave it at a point where I could just use it as a background for something else. I've done that a lot but that wasn't what I understood this lesson to be.

The other pictures were drawn to have the memory of Mother's Day in my journal. This was done on a spread in my large 9"x12" Mixed Media Strathmore journal. I actually used another of Jennifer's lesson with the apple tree which is Lesson #6 which is contour drawing. I started the apple tree straight in pen and just looked and drew from one leaf to the next without worrying about doing each individually. I started at the top and worked down. This was not blind contour and I lifted my pen several times but it was done in the spirit rather than the rule of a contour drawing. I certainly didn't try to get absolutely every leaf into my drawing! Then I added the color and I rather like it! What do you think?

The frog was done in pencil, then inked and finally painted. I lost some of the pure, bright watercolor look when I tried to add a glossy topping to it which is a shame as it was more true to the frog's colors before. It is still the frog though and I am pretty happy with how it turned out overall.

At any rate, this is some of what I have been up to. What have you been up to?Timareehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769047120660859743noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453664334855050694.post-9803754518843677892012-05-13T15:06:00.002-07:002012-05-13T15:06:21.751-07:00Happy Mother's Day

I have been trying to get on blogger all morning! It's now 2:30p.m.! I guess people must be online today sending Mother's Day messages or something. And one of the things I've been trying to do is say HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to all you mothers out there. Hope you are all having a great day.

I've talked with my daughter who sent me this frog. It's about 10 inches long and made of dichroic glass. I love it. I've been meaning to get something made of this glass for a long time. It's expensive glasss so I've put it off but now I have something made of it and it fits my frog collection! We talked on the phone this morning. My daughter's kids bought her a cotton candy maker - big size - not a toy!

I made myself a burnt sugar cake but I won't torture you with a photo. It sank! I had to make it from scratch as you can't find a mix for this flavor and living in some highish altitude it is really hard to get a cake to come out. Oh well, not pretty but I've had two pieces already (that's all I've eaten today so I am going to need something good for dinner and I just can't think of anything).

The other thing I was going to talk about is that journal you see in the photos. I bought this on Etsy from a fellow online artist and friend Robin Walsh. You can see what others she has here. I liked this one for the variety of page papers and sizes and I do love the fuzzy spine she makes. I've made my first journal entry which you see in the other photo. (I put her card on a hinge made of paper so I can flip it to see her etsy and other addies)! I'm going to have fun using this journal. She sent me another little treat since I was her very first customer. That is the 2" x 4 1/2" accordion fold journal. I am really happy with my purchase. By the way, her journals are all up-cycled from boxes and papers she has although if I remember right, she said she could make some with watercolor paper but this batch of books doesn't have any of that. Take a look as for mixed-media and writing they are great.Timareehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769047120660859743noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453664334855050694.post-5562266445665221642012-05-07T20:13:00.001-07:002012-05-07T20:15:25.206-07:00Just Call Me Quick Draw, er, McGraw?

Another of my quick little drawings. I was reminded about the Pentel Pocket Brush Pen. I have one but had forgotten about it. I haven't practiced with it enough for it to be natural to use so I just pulled out a scrap of paper (I seem to have scraps everywhere with a note on one, some numbers on others...) and drew one of my pencil jars that was sitting right in front of me. That pencil is not a curved one although it got drawn that way. I have had pencils curl like that here in the desert but not this time but that's our little secret! I added some color. I always figure color will help and it usually does at least, to me.
I decided to keep it; I actually keep almost all my sketches and I adhered it to a prepainted page in a recycled puzzle book I got from my daughter. The cover was too pretty to throw out!Timareehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769047120660859743noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453664334855050694.post-59593384065375442222012-04-30T18:49:00.003-07:002012-04-30T18:49:48.878-07:00Quick Sketches Build a Page

I started this page by sketching the iced-tea glass on some cheap memo paper because I hadn't been drawing anything and felt a lack of it. I did the drawing in probably a minute and didn't like it. So I didn't have anything to lose by adding some watercolor. Still didn't like it but set it aside to dry. In the morning I sort of liked it (isn't that how it goes?) and grabbed another paper scrap, this time a bit of watercolor paper, and drew my little plastic bowl with Dove Chocolate Easter eggs in it. The color really shows differently on this paper doesn't it? So now what to do with these is the question. I threw them in my journal and didn't look at them for a few days. I ate a couple of Dove chocolates and realized the foils I peeled off them could go with the picture. I adhered the two pictures and the foils to the page but it was lacking something. Aha! I dug the Lipton teabag wrapper out of the trash where I'd just thrown it and added that to the page plus some writing. I'm pretty happy about my page and it's truly a bit of my life here. What do you have laying around to draw and add to your journal?Timareehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769047120660859743noreply@blogger.com17tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453664334855050694.post-51362603014114098952012-04-21T20:59:00.000-07:002012-04-21T20:59:39.146-07:00Po-tae-to, Po-tah-to!

Here is a little something else I have worked on lately. It's not regular drawing or painting but it's still playing with paints so I'll post it here on my art blog anyhow!

When my dad died I took some of the cooking utensils he and my mother had used in their daily life. I've used them often and it keeps their memories close. This potato masher was used so often it only had a bit of the original yellow and black paint on it when I got it. After so many years and a trip through the dishwasher even the last bits of paint disappeared. I decided it wouldn't bother the memories I have on bit by redoing the paint. I didn't even worry about using the same colors. In my mind I can see my dad mashing the potatoes no matter what.

Although for nearly 30 years I've been a yellow and blue person (with mandatory touches of pink, white and green), I've changed over the last few years to liking red and yellow (preferably with touches of blue, green or others) so I painted this to go with my new taste in color. I used acrylic paints to paint it yellow and red with a touch of green. This goes with my kitchen pretty well although there is also a rusty red in the kitchen. (.I've got enough of both now for a thorough blending of the reds). To top it off with a nice shiny, hard finish I used Delta Air-Dry PermEnamel Clear Gloss Glaze which goes on thick and smooths out like glass.

Now I've got Dad's masher to use and to look fun in my kitchen. If Mom's rolling pen ever loses the green paint on the handles, it'll get a new paint job too! I'll never beat what my grandma did to her old aluminum kettle to keep it going though. She lost the knob on the lid so stuck a prune on the screw and let it dry. It's still there (I know because I have the kettle as one of my memory pieces) after more than 50 years!Timareehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15769047120660859743noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3453664334855050694.post-70310751740484378222012-04-19T19:27:00.000-07:002012-04-19T19:28:36.016-07:00This 'n' That

I've been working. Not finishing much but I guess that doesn't really matter. As Jennifer Edwards, Laure Ferlita and Cathy Johnson keep teaching, we can take the everyday stuff and turn it into journaling, life recording, memory stuff.

I cleaned my bathroom a couple of days ago (you really don't want to know how long it'd been since I'd last done it) and moving all my polishes I thought perhaps the colors should go into my journal. Now that I am typing this, I realize I should have drawn a couple of the bottles too! Maybe I still will. Anyhow, I had a page I didn't care for so put the polishes on that page and with gesso, rubbed out a bit of the center detail on the page so I could write my entry. I think it will be fun to see what colors I choose in another decade!

For my kitty, I saw her just lying on my bed so thought "ah ha, I can sketch her now!" but no, not really. She kept moving and I kept redrawing her ears and then she'd move again. I put down the pen. In a few minutes she started watching my bird so I picked it back up and got a really quick sketch in before she moved again. I added a bit of gouache from a kit. It added a bit to the page but it really isn't opaque enough. I'll have to try my tubes next time.

Then we had a rainy day. I thought I'd try doing a rainy colors page as Jennifer Edwards did once. Well, I like hers! Mine is okay but it will need something added to it to be complete. I'm thinking of a window in black ink, open to the colors of the rain. What do you think?

I was thinking of putting a fairy on my rain page but didn't want to risk ruining it. I guess my journals have different levels of risk. This one is a re-purposed puzzle book from my daughter so I guess I felt "safer" trying it out here. I added the watercolor rain afterwards rather than before so that may have added to the safety net! So now, one rainy day turned into two journal pages!

The last page isn't finished. I'm not quite sure what to do with it. I meant to draw a happy lady but I have trouble doing that. Mostly I get pensive ones! Any suggestions welcome.

Lastly, I want to leave you with two more pictures. These are not done by me. The Easter card is a very thoughtful gift from my blog friend Helena Sullivan. She makes many beautiful cards and I have been lucky to receive a few. This one is stitched with metallic threads that show up so much better in real life. Thanks so much Helena!

This last picture is a watercolor called "Dancing Pears" which I bought from Dabs who drives truck with her husband. She is learning to paint smaller than she used to since they actually LIVE in the truck and there isn't a lot of room! I love the bright colors and the fun of this. It will go perfectly in my kitchen. As soon as I get if framed and on the wall I'll share a picture of that here. I love it Dabs!
