I took part in a travelling friendship journal for a yahoo group I am in Blissfully Art Journaling. These are the three spreads I made for it. One was to be about me and the other two something about friendship.
The picture I painted was with gouache. The paint lifts very easily when it gets wet so I was going to spray it with fixative. I tried the fixative first on a different gouache page and it worked fine except the spray wouldn't quit spraying until the can was empty. So for this tea time painting I was goint to use some UV acrylic finishing spray from Krylon that I had. Hmmm, three big blobs hit my page before I could stop them. This time I got no spray; the stuff just bubbled out of the can till it was empty. I don't know if my cans were too old, too cold (the house was between 66 and 68 degrees) or what but I even went and found my spray bottle of hairspray I've had for a few years but couldn't get it to do anything but shoot a heave stream rather than a fine mist. So, the page is going to go as is, with three horrid blobs on it. Thank goodness they didn't blur the paint under them.
Do any of you ever seal a gouache or watercolor page in your journal? I have only done it as a trial effort and on a painted cover to a journal. I figure they don't usually get wet but when the journal is going to someone I don't know, I just wanted to be safe.
These are wonderful! I'd like to know more about the traveling journal projects. My sketchbook project is almost complete, and I'm going to miss it! I like having a theme and a purpose for my art, I think it stretches my creativity and pushes me to new limits... Let me know if you know of any journal or sketchbook projects that come along!
ReplyDeleteDon't you just hate it when that happens?!! You spend all that time and energy creating a page and then it gets blobs on it. UGH. It's still a very attractive page (all of them are) and the blob by the tea cup looks like a cast shadow!
ReplyDeleteIf you're having trouble with all three cans, it sounds like a temperature issue. I would suggest doing some tests to see if you could brush on a sealer once the paint is dried. Other than that, I don't know of anything.
Wonderful work, Timaree!
Love the sign and the tea set! Delightful additions to a great collaboration project!
ReplyDeleteLaure, I'll have to try something to brush on; that would be more dependable if it works. Thanks for the suggestion.
ReplyDeleteTammy, I just had to add a touch of humor on at least one of the pages!
Katherine, I don't do many shared journals but could let you know if I hear of any. This was in a yahoo group unlike the sketchbook project you are doing.
Lovely pages, full of harmony and colors!
ReplyDeleteI had to look twice to notice the "blobs", I see them now, but they could as well be stains on the table cloth and on the wall, you know, "natural" stains! I really like the feeling coming out of your pages, peaceful and pleasant!
these are terrific pages and i'm so sorry the spray went all wonky on you! i use gouache and watercolor a lot, and i've never sealed them - i think you'd be OK without it. i like the splotches - i'd call it the "after dinner" piece with a stain on the tablecloth!
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for my birthday e-card! It was lovely :)
Oh- these are all wonderful! Someone will be very lucky to get this beautiful art.
ReplyDeleteI too have similar spray stories. I always get some sort of glob or spit. Oh well. Sigh....
Thanks for sharing!
